I did it for my family

A Simplex Health Success Story

Posted on November 15, 2019

Richard, a 51-year old male with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated triglycerides, came to Simplex Health for help. Richard, with the support of this family, wanted to be healthier. Dania Green, a Simplex Health Registered Dietitian, began working with Richard to establish a goal of controlling his blood sugars and weight loss.

When Dania put together Richard’s health plan, she took into account Richard’s work schedule and eating behaviors to build a custom plan combining Simplex Health’s Anti-inflammatory Protocol and intermittent fasting.

Before seeking the assistance of Simplex Health, Richard’s diet was high in processed foods and low in nutrient-dense foods. The consumption of highly processed foods can lead to many health issues, including chronic inflammation, diabetes, microbiome imbalance, and more. Richard also consumed large portions, often to the point of making himself sick, and made frequent visits to the convenience store for breakfast and lunch.

Dania’s first recommendation was to eliminate highly processed and high carbohydrate foods while introducing anti-inflammatory foods. She also recommended supplements based on his specific needs and health history. Richard’s family has fully supported his lifestyle change; his daughter joined his first appointment to take notes and lend support. At the second appointment, his wife joined to learn how she could better prepare meals for Richard. “It is extremely rewarding when a client acknowledges the effect of diet on their wellbeing and is willing to make changes to improve their health,” explains Dania about working with Richard.

Richard has been successful in following Dania’s recommended anti-inflammatory protocol with intermittent fasting. As a result, he experiences fewer cravings for processed and high carbohydrate foods. He began his intermittent fasting treatment with a 12-hour feeding window. However, with reduced cravings, he has been able to increase his fasting time and now follows an 8-hour feeding window. This means he eats within an 8-hour time period (10a-6p), and fasts for 16 hours.

With Richard’s dedication, his family’s support, and his tailored protocol, his cravings have subsided, he has more energy, and he is sleeping better. Richard used to have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, most likely caused by the foods he was eating in the evening. His average sleep was 4 hours. He now averages 6-7 hours a night and is sleeping through the night. He also introduced walking and is now up to 3 miles, 3-4 times per week.

Not only has Richard’s sleep and energy improved, but he is making great strides towards the goals established at his first appointment. Richard has lost 21 pounds, lowered his HgbA1C from 8.4 to 6.9, his triglycerides from 178 to 70, and his fasting blood sugar levels from 212 to 126. Dania notes, “Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease that is reversible through diet alone. I enjoy educating my patients on the negative impact of highly processed foods on the inflammatory response in the body and ways to introduce healthier foods into their daily life. Ultimately, leading to less inflammation, more energy, and even reversing current symptoms and disease”.

Richard is putting his health first, and the possibility of reversing his type 2 diabetes is now an achievable goal, and he shares, “Fighting for your health is worth it! I did it for my family, not only for myself,” states Richard.
