Baby's First Nutrition Appointment

Calder was about 1-year-old when his mother, Mary, sought help from Simplex Health for her son’s reoccurring ear infections and reflux. Calder had been experiencing symptoms since he was an infant and was prescribed Zantac, which he had been taking for over a year for reflux. Mary wanted to learn how to improve Calder’s immune and gut health, reduce symptoms, prevent ear infections, and eliminate the need for medication.

Calder began working with Lead Dietitian and Director of Training and Development, Alex Jatzke when Calder was about 15-months-old. “Having a young child with digestive issues and recurring illness can be a scary and frustrating experience for any parent. Fortunately, nutrition can be powerful medicine to bolster the child’s immune system and prevent symptoms from returning,” states Alex.

Alex began educating Mary on nutrition, gut health, and the immune system and the likely connection between the food Calder was eating and the symptoms he was experiencing, such as ear infections, frequent diarrhea, reflux, and skin rashes. Alex then recommended Calder follow an elimination diet to identify any food triggers.

“Before Simplex Health, my son’s diet was what I thought a normal toddler’s diet should be, which consisted of pancakes, fruit, vegetables, chicken nuggets, and sometimes sugary treats like animal crackers”, says Mary as she recalls her son’s diet before working with a Simplex Health dietitian. When implementing the elimination diet, Mary and Alex were able to brainstorm meal and snack ideas that Calder would enjoy and to find alternatives to some of his favorite foods that would make the elimination diet easier. “After removing some foods from his diets, such as citrus, eggs, and dairy, my son has been SUCH A DIFFERENT CHILD in the best of ways! Since eliminating those foods from his diet, he is much happier, healthier, and a better sleeper!” explains Mary after working with Alex for about six weeks.

Since the elimination diet, Mary is helping Calder avoid his food triggers and limit sugar and refined carbohydrates while focusing on incorporating balanced meals, which include protein, healthy fats, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. Calder is not only experiencing relief from his symptoms and able to avoid medication, but he is also happier, more talkative, and sleeping through the night.
