Patient Success: A Hand to Hold During My Pregnancy Journey

A Hand to Hold During My Pregnancy Journey

10/29/2020

Iris, a 24-year-old pregnant female, came to Simplex Health after being diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes is a form of diabetes occurring during pregnancy due to hormones from the placenta blocking insulin, preventing the body from properly regulating blood glucose. Full-time Registered Dietitian, Rachel Lee, began working with Iris in May 2020 and proceeded with Simplex Health’s Gestational Diabetes and Breastfeeding Support protocol.

“Pregnancy is a different journey for every woman. Things can go exactly the way you planned, and sometimes things can change in a flip of a switch,” says Rachel. Iris’s diet before Simplex Health’s intervention consisted of heavy consumption of sugary beverages and sporadic meals that were not always nutritious.

Iris was supposed to be a standard gestational diabetes patient who would need to check her blood sugar 4x/day, modify her diet, and incorporate some walking. She never anticipated her pregnancy to be difficult, however, and went through a few unexpected scares that included sporadic hemorrhaging and giving birth much earlier than expected. “We quickly had to shift from managing diet and blood sugars to making sure Iris felt encouraged and supported so she could be the best momma she could be for her new little one in the NICU, Eva Isabella, which meant making sure she had the proper support for breastfeeding.”

At Iris’s follow-up appointment a week after delivering her baby girl, her OB/GYN told her the sobering fact that most women that walk into the emergency room in her condition don’t walk out with their child in arms. But with the support of her care team and Rachel, after 41 days in the NICU, Iris was able to bring Eva Isabella home happily. Iris reflects on her journey by saying,

“Let me end this post by urging you, whoever you are that’s reading this, not to hesitate to ask for help and support. It’s out there just waiting to be personalized and tailored to your needs.”
